List and strategy
- Only universities under 15%. Even an exceptional application can end up with nothing.
- An unaffordable "likely". If it gives no aid to internationals and you need aid, it doesn't count.
- Two Early Decisions at once. Not allowed, and risky.
- An Early Decision without running the numbers. You commit before you can compare.
- Fifteen universities or more. Supplement quality collapses.
Tests
- An English test the university doesn't accept. Check every university before you register: see which universities list the Duolingo English Test.
- An SAT whose scores arrive after the deadline. Count the score date, not the test date.
- Sending a score below the range of a test-optional university.
- Assuming "optional" applies to you. Some universities still ask internationals for scores.
The application
- Converting your grades into a GPA yourself. Let the School Profile explain your system.
- Leaving out your job or family responsibilities from your activities.
- Activity descriptions with no verbs and no numbers.
- A typo in self-reported grades, discovered in the final transcript.
Essays
- A formal dissertation instead of an essay: announced plan, a conclusion that sums up.
- An essay anyone could have written.
- Another university's name in a "Why us". The most fatal mistake, and the most common.
- A "Why us" about reputation and a beautiful campus.
- An essay written or rewritten by someone else, or by an AI.
Letters
- Asking for letters two weeks before the deadline.
- Not waiving your right to read them (the FERPA waiver).
- Leaving a teacher with no idea what an American letter is.
Money
- Not applying for aid when you apply, planning to ask later.
- Preparing financial documents in May: the I-20 and the visa fall behind.
Submitting
- Submitting on the last night. Overloaded servers, time zones, declined payments.
- Never opening the portal after submitting, and finding out in April that a document was missing.
Questions
What is the most common mistake in a "Why us" essay?
Leaving another university's name in it after reusing the essay, closely followed by writing about reputation and a beautiful campus instead of what you would actually do there.
Can I apply Early Decision to two universities?
No. Early Decision is binding and you can only have one active Early Decision application at a time.
Is it a mistake to apply to too many universities?
Beyond fifteen, the quality of supplemental essays usually collapses. Eight to twelve well-chosen universities is a common target.
